Lane Transit District Ridership Increases Two Years in a Row

September 9, 2024

For the second year in a row, Lane Transit District ridership has increased. In Fiscal Year 2024 (July 1, 2023 – June 30, 2024), ridership increased by 6% from FY23. During FY23, ridership increased 20% from the previous year.

Total passenger boardings in FY24 were 6,295,676. In FY23, there were 5,955,728 boardings.

There are a number of factors that drove the higher numbers, including the success of LTD’s effort to recruit more bus operators. A stronger operator roster allows LTD to add more service, and more frequency makes the whole system more useable.

“Community members are choosing to use public transportation more often,” said Anni Katz, LTD’s Public Information Officer. “This contributes to cleaner air, reduced traffic, and safer mobility for all.”

According to the International Energy Agency, cars emit between 57 and 322 gCO2-eq/pkm—compared to buses at just 22-92 gCO2-eq/pkm. Full buses emit 0.18 pound of CO2 per passenger mile, making them comparable to rail. With the transportation sector responsible for over 30% of Oregon’s overall greenhouse gas emissions, choosing to travel by bus, even one day a week, makes a big impact over time.
