Marker Honoring Sam and Mattie Reynolds Replaced

December 31, 2020
LTD has replaced a historical marker that honors Sam and Mattie Reynolds, one of Eugene’s founding African-American families after it was defaced in July.

The historical marker recognizes the Reynolds’ fight for civil rights and their many important contributions to Eugene and the surrounding area. It is located at an LTD EmX bus stop on West 11th Avenue near where the Reynolds’ lived after being evicted from Ferry Street Village in late 1949 for construction of the Ferry Street Bridge and what is now Alton Baker Park.

“Sam and Mattie Reynolds and their family deserve to have their story told and remembered by all of us,” said Aurora Jackson, LTD’s general manager. “LTD is honored to have a location along the west EmX route where all can learn of their inspiring example and enduring legacy.”

Originally installed in 2018, the historical marker had not been vandalized prior to July.
